The Make Hospital Food Healthier Pledge Aims to Implement Better Dietary Options for Patients
WASHINGTON — Today, Congressman Vern Buchanan, Vice Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and Chairman of the Health Subcommittee, issued the following statement on the Trump Administration’s announcement of the Make Hospital Food Healthier Pledge to encourage hospitals to reduce highly processed foods and prioritize nutrient-dense dietary options for patients:
“Making hospital food healthier is essential to the healing process and the mission of reducing chronic diseases for patients. President Trump and Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s leadership through the Make Hospital Food Healthier Pledge reflects Republican efforts to help Make America Healthy Again and ensure quality access to prevention-first whole-person care.”
“The House Ways and Means Committee has devoted a significant effort towards helping patients through healthy initiatives, including examining nutrition-based interventions in Medicare and conducting oversight of chronic disease prevention and other diet-related health challenges. The Make Hospital Food Healthier Pledge includes commitments to:
- Limit ultra-processed foods and sugar-sweetened beverages
- Use baked, broiled, roasted, stir-fried, or grilled cooking methods when preparing food
- Limit processed meats and foods high in added sugars, sodium, and artificial additives
- Increase incorporation of whole grains in diets
- Prioritize minimally processed proteins, including plant-based options
