House Republicans Vote to End the Longest Shutdown in American History
WASHINGTON — Today, Congressman Vern Buchanan, Vice Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives voted to reopen the federal government:
“Tonight, I joined my House Republican colleagues to end the longest government shutdown in American history. I want to thank the eight Senate Democrats who put country over politics and joined Republicans to advance a clean continuing resolution. Their votes allowed the House to finally act, sending the funding package to the president’s desk to deliver long-overdue relief to families, small businesses and hardworking Americans.
“While I’m encouraged that a bipartisan solution was reached, it’s unfortunate that many of my House Democratic colleagues still refused to support this bill even after watching families go hungry, veterans face delays in receiving benefits and air traffic controllers work without pay. It’s time to move forward, restore stability and focus on working for the American people.”
