SARASOTA, Fla. – Congressman Vern Buchanan will host a Service Academy Fair for all high school students in the 16th Congressional District from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 5th at Sarasota Military Academy, 801 N. Orange Ave, Sarasota, FL 34236.

“It’s an honor every year to appoint outstanding young men and women from our area to the U.S. Service Academies,” said Buchanan. “I encourage all who are interested to attend the Service Academy Fair and learn more about the nomination process and student life at the academies.”

Representatives from the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy will share information about academy life and application requirements. In addition to Congressman Buchanan, a representative from his office will be available to answer questions about the nomination process, an essential part of receiving an appointment to the U.S. Air Force, Merchant Marine, Military and Naval academies. Unlike the other service academies, the Coast Guard Academy does not require a congressional nomination for admission.

In 2021, Buchanan nominated 22 area students to the academies. The nominations are forwarded to the service academies where they will be evaluated based on their academic and extra-curricular record, leadership skills, physical stamina, and other requirements.
