Annual Competition Invites Middle and High School Students to Code an App for Display in the U.S. Capitol

BRADENTON, Fla. — Today, Congressman Vern Buchanan announced the start of the 2025 Congressional App Challenge, an annual competition that engages students in coding and computer science. The competition was created by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2015 and allows students to compete against their peers across the country. Students can participate by developing apps for the web, desktop, mobile or other platforms. This challenge aims to foster innovation and engagement in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

“I am proud to support STEM initiatives and opportunities for our students that equip them with essential skills for success,” said Buchanan. “It is our duty to create an environment where students can showcase their unique talents and abilities. The Congressional App Challenge enables students to build confidence and hone their skills. Beyond app development, it highlights the importance of fostering innovation in various fields. Our students are the future, and I look forward to seeing the creative apps they develop.”

The competition is open to all middle and high school students in Florida’s 16th Congressional District. Students entering the competition must submit their app to the Congressional App Challenge website before October 30, 2025. The winner will be featured on the Congressional App Challenge winners page and be displayed in the U.S. Capitol. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to trademark their app free of charge.
