WASHINGTON — Today, Congressman Vern Buchanan, Vice Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, announced that he has been named to the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation, a small group of the most senior tax-writers in Congress.
“I’m honored to join this respected panel, which has a large and experienced staff of economists, analysts and accountants who provide guidance to Congress on tax legislation,” said Buchanan. “I look forward to working with members of the Joint Committee as Congress prepares to write historic legislation to cut taxes for millions of Americans.”
The nonpartisan committee includes House Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith (R-Mo.) and Senate Finance Chairman Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), along with the eight most senior members from both committees. Rep. Smith chairs the Joint Committee and Sen. Crapo is the Vice Chair. Buchanan is the most senior Republican on the Ways and Means Committee.
In addition to assisting in the drafting and analysis of legislative proposals, the panel, created in 1926, also prepares official revenue estimates of all tax legislation considered by Congress and drafts legislative histories for tax-related bills. The Joint Committee Staff plays an integral role in every stage of the tax legislative process.
In addition to Buchanan, Smith and Crapo, the list of members includes:
- Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Idaho)
- Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas)
- Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.)
- Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.)
- Rep. Adrian Smith (R-Neb.)
- Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.)
- Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas)
