WASHINGTON — Congressman Vern Buchanan issued the following statement in response to the announcement that President Trump suspended the de minimis trade privilege, which allowed packages worth under $800 to be shipped into the country duty-free.
“With President Trump back in the White House, China’s free ride is over.
“For years, the Chinese Communist Party has exploited our laws to avoid paying billions of dollars in tariffs on low value goods being shipped into our country. This has not only put American companies at a competitive disadvantage but facilitated China’s shipment of fentanyl-related products into the U.S., fueling the deadliest drug crisis in history.
“President Trump was right to close the de minimis loophole—stopping Chinese tariff cheats and cutting off a pipeline of poison into the U.S.”
