BRADENTON, Fla. – Congressman Vern Buchanan today announced that the Cortez post office signed a lease extension through July 31, 2026 and will remain open in its current location.
“I am pleased to see the Cortez post office reach a long-term solution and remain open for my constituents in the area,” said Buchanan. “The Postal Service has been incredibly responsive to my concerns about the undue burden closing this facility would place on residents, and I’m glad we were finally able to find a more permanent solution. I appreciate the Postal Service for following through on their commitment to keeping the Cortez post office open going forward.”
Earlier this year, Buchanan wrote to the Postal Service to express his concern about the strain closing the Cortez post office would place on residents. Those who are serviced by the Cortez post office may have to travel more than 10 miles round trip in heavy seasonal traffic to receive their mail had the facility closed. There is no carrier delivery in the area served by this post office.
Buchanan has been in close contact with the head of the Suncoast postal district, Stephen Hardin, to urge the postal service to maintain a post office in Cortez.
Earlier this year, an eviction notice was filed against the postal service.
