WASHINGTON — Today, Congressman Vern Buchanan released the following statement following U.S. action in Venezuela:

“Nicolás Maduro is a brutal dictator whose corrupt and oppressive regime brought untold suffering to the Venezuelan people and endangered American security. His actions have cost innocent American lives as he worked with our greatest adversaries, supported violent cartels and enabled the flow of drugs to the U.S.

“His capture marks a turning point in the fight for freedom and democracy in Venezuela. After years of hardship, the Venezuelan people now have a chance to build a free and prosperous future.

“I commend the incredible bravery of the U.S. servicemembers who carried out this mission and helped bring a dangerous tyrant to justice. The U.S. military remains second to none.”

Buchanan has served as Chairman of the House Democracy Partnership (HDP) since 2023 and has served on the Commission for over than a decade. Under his leadership, the House Democracy Partnership worked with more than 1,600 combined Members of Parliament and staff globally from 47 unique countries.
