Buchanan Statement on FBI Failure to Act on Credible Tips
WASHINGTON – Congressman Vern Buchanan today released the following statement.
“The FBI’s failure to act on a credible tip last month about the Miami shooter’s intentions was an unacceptable mistake,” Buchanan said.
“The FBI owes the public a full accounting of why it ignored two tips in four months about threatening statements made by Nikolas Cruz, the person charged in the killing of 17 people at a South Florida high school.
The obvious question people will now ask is whether this tragedy could have been prevented.
The FBI received a call on Jan. 5 from a person close to Cruz providing information on Cruz’s gun ownership, desire to kill people, disturbing social media posts and the potential of him conducting a school shooting.
In fact, the FBI received two tips in four months but failed to relay that information to its Miami office for investigation.
The FBI needs to fully explain its failure to act and assure the public that it has a protocol in place to protect Americans from this type of senseless violence.”
