Buchanan’s Congressional Art Competition Hits Record-High Nominees
New “Facebook Fan Favorite” Recognition Added to Program
SARASOTA — U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan announced today that 45 high school students from Sarasota and Manatee Counties are competing in the Congressional Art Competition, a district-wide showcase for young artists. The winner, to be announced on Apr. 25, will be chosen by the curators at the Ringling Museum and will have their artwork displayed in the halls of the U.S. Capitol alongside winners from other states.
New this year is a separate recognition – the “Fan Favorite” Award – which will go to the student whose artwork wins the highest number of likes and shares combined on the Congressman’s Facebook page. Participation is open to anyone – art lovers, friends and relatives of the students. To pick a favorite all they have to do is go to the Congressman’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CongressmanBuchanan and like or share their favorite painting or photograph. That contest will also close Monday, Apr. 25.
Congressman Buchanan will present both awards at the 2016 Congressional Art Competition Reception. The reception is being held at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota.
The winning piece of artwork picked by the curators will be hung in the U.S. Capitol for one year and the winning student-artist will be awarded two roundtrip airline tickets to attend a special reception in Washington, DC. The winning piece of artwork picked on Facebook will be hung in Congressman Buchanan’s congressional office in Washington, DC.
The Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide high school visual art competition. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 students have participated.
