Buchanan To Hold Anti-Heroin Roundtable

Press Release
Event Will Include Anti-Drug Experts & Community Leaders

Florida Overdose Deaths Skyrocket by 900% in Past 5 Years

BRADENTON — U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-FL, announced today he will hold a roundtable on combating the heroin epidemic on Wednesday, March 9th at 11:00 a.m. at the Goodwill Manasota in Bradenton, FL. The event will include Sarasota and Manatee County-based community leaders as well as law enforcement, prevention and treatment professionals. Following the discussion, there will be a press availability with Rep. Buchanan and the participants.

The roundtable comes on the heels of Buchanan’s announcement that he is co-sponsoring sweeping legislation aimed at cutting off the flow of heroin into the United States as well as expanding education, prevention, and treatment programs.

“Our local stakeholders, police officers and medical professionals are on the front lines every day fighting back against drug abuse and guiding families to critical resources,” Buchanan said. “We can learn from their experiences and work together to fight back against the heroin crisis here in our community.”

The number of heroin overdose deaths in Florida increased nine-fold, from 48 to 447, from 2010-2014, according to the Florida Medical Examiners Commission. Heroin is considered the most addictive substance in the world and is cheaper to obtain than prescription narcotics.

The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (H.R. 953) and the STOP ABUSE Act (H.R. 3719) represent a multipronged approach aimed at attacking the supply of drugs, preventing new victims through better education and helping those already addicted recover and lead productive lives. The $1.8 billion cost of these bills would be offset by spending cuts in other parts of the federal budget.
