Buchanan Applauds Police on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day
WASHINGTON – On National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan applauded our first responders who put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities.
“America’s law enforcement officers don’t hesitate to confront danger when lives are at stake,” said Buchanan. “Today – and every day – let us thank these unsung heroes who protect Americans around the clock. We need to send an unequivocal message that the heinous targeting of police officers or first responders is intolerable. That is why I reiterate my calls for Congress to stand with our first responders and pass the Thin Blue Line Act.”
Earlier this month, Buchanan introduced the Thin Blue Line Act, which toughens penalties against anyone who murders police and other first responders. The bill, which passed the U.S. House in the 115th Congress, would make the murder or attempted murder of a first responder an “aggravating” factor in death penalty determinations.
Buchanan said Congress should immediately pass his legislation to crack down on criminals who would harm police or first responders. “These brave men and women and their families put it all on the line and deserve our unwavering support.”
Ambush-style attacks on police have increased in recent years and contributed to 145 law enforcement fatalities last year alone. In March 2018, the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) Buchanan was honored as for his “outstanding support for American law enforcement.”
